Before assuming you need to register or refile anything, it's worth confirming what FBR's records already say about you. Checking your Active Taxpayer List (ATL) status takes under a minute and can be done three different ways, using nothing more than your CNIC.
Method 1: FBR's Online Verification
- Go to fbr.gov.pk and open the Active Taxpayer List / Online Verification System
- Enter your 13-digit CNIC without dashes
- The result shows Active Taxpayer, Inactive, or Not Found
Method 2: SMS Check
- Open your phone's messaging app
- Type your 13-digit CNIC number
- Send it to 9966
- You'll receive a reply confirming Active or Inactive status along with your name
Method 3: Tax Asaan Mobile App
- Download Tax Asaan from Google Play or the App Store
- Open the Taxpayer Profile or ATL Verification section
- Enter your CNIC for an instant result
Any of these methods can also be used to check someone else's status — useful when buying property, hiring a contractor, or confirming a vendor's filer status before paying them, since it affects which withholding tax rate applies.
Understanding Your Result
| Result | Meaning | What To Do |
|---|---|---|
| Active Taxpayer | You're on the ATL and enjoy filer WHT rates | Nothing — keep filing yearly |
| Inactive | You have an NTN but didn't file last year's return | File your return promptly |
| Not Found | No NTN is registered against your CNIC | Register an NTN, then file a return |
Timing Matters
FBR refreshes the ATL every Sunday. If you filed your return recently, give it up to a week before checking — a fresh filing won't show up immediately even though it's already on record.
Not Listed? Here's the Fastest Route Back On
- Register your NTN on FBR IRIS if you don't already have one
- File your income tax return for the most recent tax year
- Pay the Rs. 1,000 ATL surcharge if you're filing late
- Recheck your status after the next weekly update
