What Is NTN Registration?
An NTN (National Tax Number) is issued by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and is required for filing income tax returns, becoming an Active Filer, opening certain bank accounts, registering property, and running a legal business in Pakistan. Without an NTN, you cannot appear on the FBR Active Taxpayer List (ATL) — meaning you pay higher withholding tax on banking transactions, vehicle registration, and property purchases.
Who Needs an NTN?
- Salaried individuals earning above the taxable threshold
- Freelancers and remote workers (Upwork, Fiverr, Payoneer, direct clients)
- Small business owners, shopkeepers, and traders
- Property owners and investors
- Anyone who wants Active Filer status to reduce withholding tax
Documents Required
- Original CNIC
- Active mobile number registered in your own name
- Personal email address
- Proof of income or address (salary slip, business letterhead, or utility bill)
- For business NTN: business registration or partnership documents
