In Pakistan, your 13-digit CNIC number doubles as your NTN for individuals — there’s no separate 7-digit number to memorise anymore. But "having an NTN" and "being registered and active with FBR" are two different things, and a lot of people only find out the difference when a property registrar, bank, or business partner asks them to prove it. Verifying NTN status by CNIC is free, takes under two minutes, and doesn’t require creating an account.
Method 1: FBR’s Official Online Verification
This is the most reliable method and the one FBR itself recommends:
- Go to iris.fbr.gov.pk and look for "Verifications" in the top menu (no login required for this specific check)
- Select "Taxpayer Profile Inquiry"
- Choose "CNIC" as the registration type and enter the 13-digit number with no dashes
- Complete the captcha and click Verify
- FBR displays the taxpayer’s name, registration status, and NTN reference number instantly
If a "Reference No." appears in the result, that is the person’s 7-digit NTN — useful for older forms that still ask for it separately from the CNIC.
Method 2: SMS Verification (No Internet Needed)
FBR also runs a free SMS shortcut for a quick Active Taxpayer List (ATL) check: send the 13-digit CNIC (no dashes) as a text message to 9966. You’ll get a reply within seconds confirming whether that CNIC is currently on the ATL for the latest tax year — useful when you just need a yes/no answer and don’t have a laptop handy.
What the Result Actually Tells You
A "registered" result means the person has an NTN on file. It does not automatically mean they’re an Active Filer — for that, you specifically need to check the Active Taxpayer List (ATL) status, which updates every Sunday. Someone can be registered but still be a non-filer if their most recent return hasn’t been processed or filed on time.
When You’d Need to Verify Someone Else’s NTN
- Before renting out property to a tenant who’ll be paying rent via bank transfer
- Before large B2B transactions, to confirm a vendor’s withholding tax status
- Before property purchase, to confirm the seller’s filer status (affects your own withholding calculation)
- Employers verifying a new employee’s NTN before running payroll
