If you have been putting off getting an NTN because you assumed it means standing in line at an FBR office, that assumption is out of date. Registration happens entirely through the IRIS portal, costs nothing in government fees, and — if your paperwork is straightforward — can be wrapped up the same day. Here's exactly what the online process looks like in 2026.
What NTN Actually Is
Your National Tax Number is the identifier FBR uses to track every one of your tax obligations. For most individual taxpayers — salaried employees, freelancers, landlords — there's no separate number to remember: your CNIC becomes your NTN once your IRIS profile is activated. Businesses, partnerships, and companies are issued a distinct entity NTN instead.
No Government Fee, No Office Visit
NTN registration on IRIS carries zero government charge. If anyone asks you to pay a "fee" for the NTN certificate itself, that's not an FBR charge — at most, a consultant is billing for their time in handling the paperwork correctly on your behalf.
The Online Steps
- Go to iris.fbr.gov.pk and select "Registration for Unregistered Person" on the login screen
- Enter your CNIC number, a working email address, and a mobile number registered against that CNIC
- Verify the OTP sent to your mobile
- Set a username and password for your IRIS account — keep it safe, as password recovery is not instant
- Log in and complete Registration Form 181 with your personal details, income source, and (if applicable) business information
- Add your bank account number and any property/asset details requested
- Submit — FBR typically reviews and activates individual NTNs within 1–3 working days, often the same day
- Once active, download your NTN certificate directly from IRIS
Documents to Have Ready
| You Are | You'll Need |
|---|---|
| Salaried / Freelancer | CNIC, mobile, email, employer or client details, bank account |
| Sole Proprietor | Owner's CNIC, business name and address, business bank account |
| Partnership | All partners' CNICs, partnership deed, firm details |
| Company | SECP Certificate of Incorporation, directors' CNICs |
Individual NTN vs Business NTN — Don't Mix Them Up
- An individual's 13-digit CNIC serves directly as their NTN once activated — no separate registration required
- A business, firm, or company instead receives its own distinct NTN, separate from any owner's personal one
- You can hold both simultaneously: a personal NTN for your salary or freelance income and a company NTN for a business you own
- Always file the return matching the correct income head against the correct NTN
Registering Is Only Half the Job — Get Onto the ATL
An NTN with no return filed against it still counts as non-filer status. To actually benefit from lower withholding tax rates, you need to appear on FBR's Active Taxpayer List, which means filing your return for the latest completed tax year. The ATL updates weekly (Sunday), and your name typically shows up within about a week of filing. You can check your status anytime at atl.fbr.gov.pk or by sending an SMS with "ATL" followed by your CNIC to 9966.
Common Slip-Ups That Delay Approval
- Mobile number not registered against your own CNIC with your cellular provider
- Address on the application not matching your CNIC or utility bill
- Using a browser with known IRIS compatibility issues — stick to Chrome or Firefox and clear cache if forms fail to submit
- Missing or unclear scanned copies of required documents
