If you've never touched FBR's IRIS portal before, the whole process can feel intimidating from the outside — but registering from scratch is genuinely a same-day task once you know the sequence. Here's the complete walkthrough, from creating your account to filing your first return.
Step 1: Create Your IRIS Account
Go to iris.fbr.gov.pk and select "Registration for Unregistered Person." You'll need your CNIC, an active mobile number registered in your own name, and a working email address. Enter these details and IRIS will send an OTP to verify your mobile — complete this and your account is created immediately.
Step 2: Set Your Password
Once your account exists, IRIS emails and texts you a temporary PIN. Log in with it and set a permanent password. Keep this somewhere safe — you'll need it every filing season, and IRIS's password reset flow (via CNIC and mobile OTP) can take a day or two if you lose it.
Step 3: Complete Your Registration Form (Form 181)
After logging in, IRIS prompts you to complete the "Registration for Modification" form — this is where you confirm your address, add your bank account details, and select your business or employment activity if applicable. Submitting this properly is what actually generates your NTN.
Step 4: Receive Your NTN
Once submitted, FBR typically issues your NTN within 24 hours, confirmed by SMS and visible on your IRIS dashboard. For salaried individuals, this NTN is simply your activated CNIC — no separate number is created.
Step 5: File Your First Return
Having an NTN does not make you a Filer — that only happens once you submit your first income tax return, declaring your income and (if applicable) a wealth statement. The annual deadline is September 30. Filing on time from year one puts you on the Active Taxpayer List and unlocks lower withholding tax rates on banking, property, and vehicle transactions.
What to Set Up Right After Registering
- If you have employees or pay contractors, register as a withholding agent and start filing monthly WHT statements
- Set calendar reminders for September 30 (annual return) and, if applicable, the quarterly advance tax dates
- Save your CNIC, salary certificates, and bank statements somewhere you can find them every year — you'll need them annually
Common First-Time Issues
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Forgot password | Use "Forgot Password" with CNIC and mobile OTP |
| NTN not found | Enter CNIC without dashes; confirm mobile number is active |
| Return won't submit | Clear browser cache; use Chrome or Firefox instead of Internet Explorer |
| Payment not reflecting | Wait 24 hours, then contact FBR helpline if still missing |
Skip the Learning Curve
If you'd rather not navigate IRIS yourself the first time, NTNWaale can register your NTN and file your first return remotely — usually completed within 24 to 48 hours of receiving your documents on WhatsApp.
