A lot of students earning through Fiverr gigs, online tutoring, campus part-time jobs, or a small freelance design/writing side hustle assume tax doesn't apply to them because they're "just a student." FBR doesn't have a student exemption — what matters is your income, not your enrollment status.
When Does Student Income Actually Become Taxable?
The same Rs. 600,000 annual exempt threshold that applies to everyone else applies to students. If your combined side income for the tax year (1 July–30 June) stays under that, you likely owe no tax — but you may still want an NTN for other reasons (see below).
Reasons Students Register for NTN Even Below the Threshold
- Opening or upgrading a bank account — many banks ask for NTN once account activity increases
- Freelance platform payouts — Payoneer and some local payment processors are smoother with an NTN on file
- Study-abroad or visa applications — a filer history, even a short one, can support financial documentation
- Starting your Active Filer clock early — so that by the time you graduate and take a full-time job, you already have a compliant history
Freelance Income Specifically
If your side income comes from foreign clients — Upwork, Fiverr, remote gigs paid via Payoneer or Wise — it may qualify for IT/IT-enabled export tax treatment (a much lower withholding rate) once registered correctly with FBR. This is worth doing properly from the start rather than switching over later.
Tutoring and Local Freelance Income
Local income — tuition fees paid in cash or bank transfer, campus part-time pay, local freelance clients — is treated as ordinary business/other income once it crosses the exempt threshold, and is reported the same way as any small side business.
What Documents You'll Need
- Original CNIC
- Personal mobile number and email
- Basic income record — bank statement, Payoneer/Wise history, or a simple log of tuition payments received
