FBR's redesigned IRIS 2.0 portal moved menus around, changed how login works, and left a lot of taxpayers stuck on errors that weren't a problem on the old version. Here's how to get through login, password reset, and return filing on the new interface without wasting an afternoon on it.
Security note: The only official IRIS address is iris.fbr.gov.pk. FBR never asks for your CNIC, password, or OTP over phone, SMS, or WhatsApp — treat any such request as a scam.
What You Can Do on IRIS 2.0
- File your income tax return (salaried, business, AOP, company)
- Register for an NTN as a new taxpayer
- Submit your wealth statement
- Pay advance tax and monthly withholding tax
- Reply to FBR notices through the Correspondence section
- Check your Active Taxpayer List status and apply for refunds
Logging In, Step by Step
- Open iris.fbr.gov.pk in Chrome or Edge — older browsers frequently fail on the new interface.
- Enter your 13-digit CNIC without dashes as your username (or your business NTN, if different).
- Type your password — it's case-sensitive.
- Complete the captcha exactly as shown; refresh if it's unclear.
- Click Login. First-time users may see a profile-completion prompt before reaching the dashboard.
If pages load slowly, clear your browser cache and try again early in the morning — traffic spikes badly in the days before September 30.
Resetting a Forgotten Password
- Click "Forgot Password" on the login page.
- Enter your CNIC along with the email or mobile number registered with FBR.
- Enter the OTP sent to your mobile within about 3 minutes before it expires.
- Set a new password with at least 8 characters, one capital letter, one number, and one special character.
If your registered mobile number is no longer active, online reset won't work — you'll need to visit your Regional Tax Office with your original CNIC to update your contact details, or have someone handle that visit on your behalf.
Common Errors and Quick Fixes
- Invalid Credentials: Re-check CNIC formatting and Caps Lock; reset the password if it still fails.
- Captcha Incorrect: Refresh for a new image and type exactly as shown — it's case-sensitive.
- Session Expired: IRIS logs you out after 30 minutes idle; just log back in.
- Account Blocked: Five failed attempts locks the account for 24 hours, or use password reset to get back in immediately.
- Blank or Frozen Page: Disable ad blockers, clear cache, or try incognito mode.
- OTP Not Arriving: Wait a few minutes (Jazz/Telenor delays are common) before requesting again.
- Form Stuck Saving: This is usually server load near the deadline — try early morning and save your draft frequently.
- "CNIC Not Registered": You need to complete e-enrollment first through "Registration for Unregistered Person."
Filing Your Return on IRIS 2.0
- Log in as above.
- Go to the Returns section and select Income Tax Return for the relevant tax year.
- Choose your category — salaried, business individual, AOP, or company.
- Enter salary and any other income, matching your employer's certificate and bank profit statements.
- Complete the wealth statement, declaring assets and liabilities where required.
- Submit and download your acknowledgment receipt as proof of filing — your ATL status typically updates within 48 hours.
